Aizawl: The Tlabung branch of Young Mizo Association (YMA) has urged all village councils within the Tlabung sub-division of south Mizoram’s Lunglei district bordering Bangladesh to raze all unauthorised villages within their respective jurisdiction.
Sources from Tlabung said on Sunday that leaders of YMA convened a meeting with representatives of all village councils in Tlabung area on Saturday and asked them to call back residents of illegal villages to their respective villages within three months.
Expressing regret for the establishment of unauthorised villages in Tlabung area, YMA leaders sought helps from Chakma village council leaders to raze the illegal villages by August, the sources said.
The YMA leaders said that there are at least nine unauthorised villages within Tlabung area. Tlabung YMA also asked all residents of unauthorised villages to vacate their villages and shift to nearby villages within three months.
It also appealed to all village councils to find out if there are any other illegal villages in the area. On March 15, local administration minister K Lalrinliana had informed the state assembly that there were 25 illegal villages being established by illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.
Of these , 16 were set up in Lunglei district, four in Aizawl district, three in Champhai district and two in Mamit district bordering Tripura, he had said.
The state assembly had also passed The Mizoram Maintenance of Household Register Bill, 2019, to detect foreigners, which awaits assent from the governor.
Chief minister Zoramthanga, who introduced the bill said that after its enactment, it would help the state government in detecting foreigners and identifying genuine residents of the state.
He had said that influx of foreigners into the state through its porous borders has remained a serious concern for several decades and in many cases the benefits of development and welfare programmes are found eaten away to a large extent by such foreigners who clandestinely stayed back and assimilated to the local people.
