Guwahati: A GPS tracker installed in a two-wheeler reportedly led to the arrest of Jahnabi Saikia, one of the prime accused in the Guwahati blast case, on Thursday.

As per sources, Saikia hired the scooty (a Honda Dio bearing registration number AS-01-DQ-4420) from Ahija, a Guwahati-based car and bike rental firm, on Wednesday afternoon, hours before the incident, to allegedly use it to lob the grenade at the crowd.

At least 12 people were injured, two of them critically, in the explosion that took place near the Guwahati Central shopping mall on Wednesday evening.

Saikia was riding the scooty, while her pillion rider allegedly hurled the grenade on that day, said the police. As per sources, she even followed basic traffic rules like wearing a helmet on her way out of the rental firm’s office.

Incidentally, Saikia thought that a rented scooty will be a safe bet instead of a hiring a car from service providers like Ola or Uber. In fact, she even submitted her documents such as Aadhaar card, driver’s licence and voter ID card and mentioned that she was an actress. Little did she know that she was in absolute ignorance, and that every rental firm installs a GPS tracker in their vehicles.

Jahnabi Saikia was a small-time Assamese actress

After the blast, it came to the notice of the firm’s owner, Upakul Talukdar, that the scooty was hired from them. He immediately rang up the Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia, saying they have all the details and can help them track down the culprits.

Till then, Saikia was all along claiming that she had no connection with the blast and was just related to the militant outfit. This was after her rented accommodation was raided by a special branch of Assam Police in Baghorbari, Guwahati on Thursday morning.

Despite her continued denial, the rental company had proof of her being related to the grenade blast.

GPS footage showed that around 7:50 pm, when the blast happened, Saikia allegedly took a U-turn, went towards the opposite side of the road. Footage also showed that there was someone riding pillion on the scooty.

According to the police, the pillion rider has also been arrested, but no details have been revealed so far, as investigation is under progress.

This information was given by the rental company to the police on the day Saikia’s house was raided.

The police have arrested a total of four persons so far in connection with the grenade blast. Earlier, the police arrested a pro-talk ULFA leader, Pranamoy Rajguru, along with Saikia from a rented house at Baghorbari on Thursday. Later, a bomb expert of the banned outfit, Amit Ballav Goswami, was also arrested from Golaghat.
