Assam: 2 suspected ULFA(I) rebels surrender in Sivasagar district

Guwahati: Banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) faced a massive blow after two of its rebels surrendered before security forces on Sunday.

The two militants were identified as Rupak Asom alias Mantu Saikia and Podum Asom alias Rupam Das.

Rupak Asom, who is a self-styled major of the banned militant outfit, surrendered at Maibella Army camp in Assam’s Sivasagar district on Sunday. He hails from Dichangmukh in Sivasagar and carried a bounty of Rs 10 lakh and was involved in many activities of extortion in upper Assam.

Meanwhile, Podum Asom, who was a new recruit in the banned outfit, gave himself up before the Army unit of Dao Divison of the Spear Corps in Sivasagar. He, too, was involved in extortion activities in and around the district.

As per sources, it has been ascertained that more insurgents are likely to give up their association with the proscribed outfit owing to some internal conflicts and harsh condition in the camps. “It is getting difficult for the ULFA (I) leadership to persuade the ground cadres to stick to the pseudo cause of the outfit,” the sources added.

Meanwhile, a huge cache of arms and ammunition along with some extortion notices were recovered from both the ULFA (I) rebels by security personnel.
