Guwahati: A D voter in died mysteriously at a detention camp in Tezpur Central Jail of Assam’s Sonitpur district on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Basudev Biswash (58), who died after allegedly falling from his bed at the detention camp.
Biswash was suffering from asthma and was undergoing treatment; he was declared dead by doctors after he was rushed to Kanaklata Civil Hospital in Sonitpur by the jail authorities on Sunday. Earlier, he was also taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for better treatment after he was diagnosed with asthma.
As per reports from police officials, the deceased had been lodged in the detention camp since 2016 while undergoing trial at a Foreigners’ Tribunal in Nagaon over his ‘D voter’ tag.
Meanwhile, Biswash’s body has been sent to Rupahi in neighbouring Nagaon district, from where he hailed, for the last rites.
D voters or ‘doubtful voters’ are determined by special tribunals under the Foreigners Act, and persons declared as ‘D voters’ are not provided with an elector’s photo identity card.
In 2011, the Gauhati High Court ordered the D voters to be transferred to Foreigners’ Tribunals set up under the Foreigners Tribunal Order 1964, and lodged them in detention camps set up across Assam.
