Tripura scraps ‘no-detention’ policy for students till Class VIII

Agartala: Nine years after the Right to Education Act was implemented, the Tripura government has decided to do away with the ‘no-detention’ policy for students up to Class VIII.

It will now be replaced by annual evaluation in Class V and VIII from this academic session. the ‘pass-fail’ system. “The state government has initiated the ‘pass-fail’ system in Tripura. Students will have to pass the examination to get promoted to the next class,” said education minister Ratan Lal Nath.

As per Nath, the idea of re-introducing the pass-fail system will be started in schools from the 2019-20 academic session itself. “The practice will be introduced in Class V and Class VIII. In case of students of Class I to Class IV and Class VI and VII, their papers will be evaluated,” he added.

However, students of Class V and Class VIII will have to pass the examination, only then will they will be promoted to the next class.

According to Nath, the Central government amended the Right to Education Act in January this year. As per the amendment, the states were asked to decide on the pass-fail system.

Earlier, the system was banned on April 1, 2010. The central government took this decision for ensuring education for all according to the Right to Education Act. However, the ban on pass-fail system had affected the students’ overall development and several surveys had proved that.

In view of the ban on system, several states including Kerala, Haryana and Delhi, among others, had opposed the decision. At the same time, states like Maharashtra, Telangana and Karnataka had welcomed the decision. Naturally, mixed reactions were witnessed throughout the country regarding the decision.
