Guwahati: Tension gripped Assam’s Hailakandi district after a clash broke out between two groups at Marwaripatti locality of the town on Friday.
The clash that turned into a riot-like situation allegedly broke out over a issue of parking motorcycles in front of a mosque in Hailakandi town.
As per reports, the brawl broke out after a video showing some unidentified miscreants tearing a motorcycle seat cover went viral on social media sites. It has been alleged that the video was circulated by Hailakandi MLA Anwar Hussain Laskar on May 9.
Several people were critically injured in the clash after people started pelting stones at each other. Several vehicles parked nearby were also burnt down.
However, the situation was brought under control after security personnel immediately rushed to the spot and resorted to lathicharge and blank fire in an effort to disperse the angry mob.
Meanwhile, the district administration has imposed Section 144 in Hailakandi town following the clash between the two groups.
The police are investigating the matter.
