Agartala: The Tripura police on Wednesday booked Congress state vice-president Tapas Dey for sharing fake news about chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb’s divorce suit on social media.

Talking to EastMojo, deputy inspector general (DIG) Arindam Nath confirmed that a case was registered against the senior Congress leader for sharing the fake news.

“A case has been registered against Dey in this connection. One person named Saikat Talapatra, who had also shared fake content over the Internet, has been detained. He has admitted to sharing the fake news item on social media,” Nath added.

Reacting to the issue, Congress leader Dey said that this was ridiculous and people know that the police are working on instructions of the ruling leaders.

“I have spoken with DIG Nath over phone and have accepted that I have shared the news with my friends. The official has told me about an FIR against me and that too for sharing it within the media groups for getting it confirmed,” Dey said.

The vendors should also be booked for selling and distributing the newspapers, if sharing a news item is crime, Dey added.

Earlier, Saikat Talapatra was arrested from MBB airport while trying to leave the state on April 28. He was detained on charges of defamation and criminal conspiracy against the CM and his family members by sharing the fake news with objectionable content.

The court had sent him to three days in police custody on Monday. On Wednesday, the court sent him for another three days in custody.

Meanwhile, three persons have been arrested including one police constable and a journalist, for sharing fake news over social media. The constable was granted bail; however, the journalist will remain in custody until the next hearing on May 4.

Earlier, the CM’s wife, Niti Deb, said that the rumours were a part of political conspiracy spread by a section of the people to malign the image of the CM “who is running an honest government in the state”.

CM Deb had also said that there was no dispute between them. “We both were out of the state and in the mean time some section of people tried to defame my family by making personal attack for their political agenda,” he added.

Meanwhile, the main accused, Anupam Paul, who once handled the BJP state’s IT cell, remains to be on the run even after a number of search operations were conducted by the police.
