Imphal: The Indian Navy on Wednesday sent a 14-member team for the ongoing search operations for three persons who went missing after their boat capsized in the Maphou dam reservoir in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Sunday.
The team, which was airlifted to Imphal from Vishakhapatnam in an Indian Air Force aircraft, includes 12 divers and two hydrographers (survey sailors).
Two boats, carrying 12 tourists capsized after they were hit by a cyclonic storm on Sunday. Only nine passengers were rescued; three are still reported missing. They have been identified as Saggapam Rajiv (36), Saggapam Romen (31) and Ningthoujam Rina (20), all hailing from from the state’s Bishnupur district.
Although the state had immediately put rescue operations into action with the fire department, police and state disaster management joining in, the Navy expert team was also called in to aid them.
After the incident, chief minister N Biren Singh has announced that only boats from government approved manufacturers/dealers with a licensing system will be allowed in lakes and water bodies in Manipur.
