Aizawl: Mizoram has a total of over 10.76 lakh mobile phone subscribers which is almost equal to the total state population of over 10.97 lakh as per 2011 census.
According to Statistical Handbook, Mizoram 2018 released recently, five telecom companies including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), operating in the state and have 10,75,316 subscribers in 2018.
Airtel with over 4.40 lakh subscribers is the largest service provider, followed by BSNL, which has more than 2.08 lakh subscribers, the report said.
Aircel has 1,80,980 subscribers, Reliance Jio-1,60,102, Vodafone-75,280 and Idea has least subscribers at 10,181.
BSNL, Indian state-owned telecommunication company that first came to Mizoram had a meager 2,450 subscribers when it was launched in the state in 2003-2004.
Both Airtel and Aircel were launched in the state in 2006 and 2007 respectively.
At present BSNL has extended 8,156 broadband internet connections, erected 156 mobile towers and 57 telephone exchanges.
While BSNL has extended total of over 50,000 landline connections during its prime time between 2003 and 2010, it has been reduced to 15,097.
Landline connections are mainly used in offices of government and company and some in business shops.
Although the telecom company has now crossed 2 lakh subscribers, the number of subscribers has gradually decline possibly due to arrival of other service providers.
The number of PCO booth has also reduced to a great extent. While there were over 1,394 PCO booths in the whole of Mizoram during the initial period roughly between 2007-2008, the number has significantly declined to 173 now.
Of the service providers operated in Mizoram, Airtel received the highest revenue.
The average amount spent on mobile top-up/SMS pack/Internet pack by subscribers is estimated at Rs 170 per month, which is considered to be the highest in the country.
