Agartala: A journalist was arrested from Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in connection with the fake news campaign suggesting domestic violence and divorce case against chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb from his wife.
Talking with EastMojo the West Tripura Officer In-Charge Subrata Chakraborty said Saikat Talapatra was arrested from Agartala Airport while he was trying to leave the state by an evening flight on Sunday.
“A case was filed against him in the police stations with charges of spreading fake news and propagating criminal conspiracy to defame the chief minister and his family members. He will be produced before the court on Monday.” Chakraborty said.
Saikat Talapatra, who was presently working as a freelance journalist, has earlier worked with several media house. His recent work was with a local TV channel where he worked for a special election programme.
Prasanta Bhattacharya, a senior journalist, condemned the arrest of Talapatra and said anyone who is speaking against the government is being arrested and an emergency like situation is prevailing in the state under this BJP-IPFT government.
“Free-and-fair journalism is under severe attack and pressure is being created from all aspects over anyone talking against,” Bhattacharya said.
A police constable, Jamal Hussien, from North District of Tripura was detained by the police on Sunday afternoon after a case was registered against him for sharing fake news posts involving the chief minister’s wife filing a divorce suit against him.
Hussein is also serving as private guard of Islam Uddin, a CPI-M MLA of Kadamtala Kurti assembly constituency in the North District.
“A case was registered against Hussein for uploading objectionable contents over his Facebook account following which a case was registered against him and later he was arrested,” an official said.
Earlier in the morning, the chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb along with his wife arrives from Delhi to Agartala here in Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Airport here on Sunday by an early morning flight.
Speaking with the media persons, CM’s wife Niti Deb said, “She was in Delhi at her Mother’s place since past couple of weeks for her treatment purpose.”
Niti said the rumors are a part of political conspiracy done by a section of people to malign the image of on such Chief Minister who is running an honest government in the state.
“The personal attack makes an impact over the minds of the children’s and when such attempts are made also impacts the prestige of a woman”, Niti Deb said.
Biplab Deb said, there is no dispute between us, we both were out of the state and in the mean time some section of people tried to defame my family by making personal attack for their political agenda.
While on the other hand, another Anupam Paul, booked under same case in West Tripura police station, is yet to be caught even after several attempts were made by the police to nab him.
