Guwahati: Polling gets underway for the four remaining constituencies in Assam and one in Tripura during the third and final phase of Lok Sabha elections in the Northeast on Tuesday.
In Assam, the four seats that are going to polls are Guwahati, Barpeta, Kokrajhar and Dhubri and the one in Tripura is Tripura East.
In Assam, a total of 77,0622 electorates including 38,15,335 male, 36,61,570 female and 157 members of the third gender are exercising their franchise at 9,577 polling booths across the four constituencies, which will decide the fate of 54 candidates in the state.
Of the 4 Lok Sabha constituencies, a straight fight will be witnessed in Guwahati, a triangular in Barpeta and Dhubri and a four-cornered fight in Kokrajhar. In Guwahati, there are 17 candidates in fray, 15 in Dhubri, 13 in Barpeta and nine in Kokrajhar district.
Meanwhile, in Tripura, a total of 12,61,861 voters, including 6,20,342 women and four transgenders would exercise their franchise for the Tripura East Parliamentary seat. Polling in the constituency, which was to go for polls on April 18, was deferred to April 23 on security grounds.
Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements for the third phase of polling have been arranged in all the constituencies with adequate number of security forces deployed at all the polling centres.
Moreover, state borders have been sealed to prevent possible transportation of any illegal or prohibitive items like liquor or weapons. Also, intense checking of private and public vehicles are also being conducted.
