Aizawl: At least five people, mostly youths, have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a groups of teenagers on Friday night, the police said on Saturday.
The accused have been identified as F Lalruatsanga, Lalrintluanga, Ramdingliana, Lalruatfela, all of them from Armed Veng south in Aizawl, and Nicky Lalnunmawia, a resident of Salem Veng in Aizawl.
The accused were having a picnic on the bank of Tlawng river near Sairang village, about 21 km from Aizawl, on Friday when they exchanged abusive words with a group of boys from Sairang village, who were boating and searching for a drowned body in the river, Sairang police OC Rohminga told EastMojo.
The incident occurred around 4 pm when the youths, who were under influence of alcohol, suddenly attacked the teenagers, when they tried to keep their boats on the bank of the river, he said.
At least three teenagers were injured in the fight and some of them sustained severe injuries, the police officer added.
The victims were identified as Vanlalmalsawmatluanga, PC Vanlalhriatpuia and Lalruatfela, all of them from Sairang village.
They were rushed to Aizawl Civil Hospital on Friday evening.
Three of them were released from the hospital after giving treatment, while Vanlalhriatpuia, who sustained severe injuries on his head, was admitted in the hospital and his condition was stated to be critical, Rohminga said.
He said that at least eight people were believed to have been involved in the assault.
Four of the eight accused were arrested on Friday night, while one was arrested on Saturday following the FIR lodged at Sairang police station, he added. The police officer also said that investigation is on and a manhunt has been launched to nab the other accused.
Meanwhile, Sairang and its neighbouring villages vehemently condemned the incident and demanded stringent punishment against the accused.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Aizawl on Saturday, Sairang village council president Vanlalrammawia said that the teenagers were on a search operation for a youth from Electric Veng in Aizawl, who had drowned in the Tlawng river on Good Friday.
The youths did not just assault the teenagers, but also damaged one boat owned by the village council, which was used for searching the bodies, he said.
He asked the law enforcement agencies to nab the culprits and give them stringent punishment.
