A group of 30-odd supporters of the ruling Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) reportedly attacked Pragya Deb Burman by pelting stones and bricks at her convoy in Gultilla area of Tulasikhari in Khowai district of Tripura. One of them, Mintu Debbarma, was nabbed by her security persons.
The TPCC president then reportedly rushed to Khowai police station after receiving the information of the attack on the Congress candidate.
The Khowai police station has registered a suo moto case against the Congress president for slapping the accused inside the police stations in presence of police officials.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, the BJP criticised the act of the TPCC president claiming this is why the opposition party has been demanding to defer the elections, so that they can use their muscle power over the innocent people and get votes for the party.
Speaking at the press conference, state education minister Ratan Lal Nath said that the Congress president has shown his real face by slapping an innocent person, that too inside the police station, and this shows what they can do in the absence of police and administration.
On the other hand, IPFT general secretary Mevar Kumar Jamatia said that Mintu who was nabbed by the personal security guards of Pragya Deb Burman, was targeted and had no link with the attack on her convoy.
Mintu was unfortunately passing by from the area as he was there to attend ‘Garia Puja’ but the security guards forcefully arrested him and took him to Khowai police station.
Replying to the BJP and IPFT, Congress West Tripura candidate Subal Bhowmik said that the attack was a joint game of the coalition government following the mass popularity and people’s response that the Congress candidate and the party has received in the recent times.
Lashing out at the BJP state president and chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Bhowmik said that Pradyot, being the state president of a national political party, does not receive any guard or escort while his visits to remote areas but the current chief minister enjoys all facilities being the party president of BJP.
