The 40-foot-long ‘gamusa’ at the state CEO’s office in Assam on Wednesday

Guwahati: In a heartfelt gesture, a woman from Assam’s Morigaon district gifted a 40-foot-long phulam gamusa to the state chief electoral officer’s (CEO) office in the state on Wednesday.

Touched by the deed, the Assam CEO’s office took to Twitter saying, “40-feet gamocha by an Assamese lady is nothing but a manifestation of the rich and enduring heritage of the Assamese Women weavers [sic]. The dexterity of Morigaon women is contributing to the upholding of the biggest festival of democracy at Morigaon.”

Gamusa holds a high cultural significance in the Northeastern state of Assam. It is often gifted to honour or respect a person, apart from traditional usage. Also, weaving gamusas is one the major cottage industries of the state.

The Morigaon district of Assam underwent polling during the second phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 18.
