Gauhati parliamentary constituency’s Congress candidate Bobbeeta Sharma and BJP’s Queen Oja were seen dancing to the folk tunes of Bihu

Guwahati: With Assam’s coveted festival of Bihu currently underway, political rivals took a break from their hectic electioneering to join in the fun and festivities and dance to the beats of dhol and pepa.

In the high-powered Gauhati Lok Sabha constituency, which is going to polls during the third phase on April 23, Congress candidate Bobbeeta Sharma and BJP’s Queen Oja were seen sharing the same space, even if for a short while.

Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi accompanied Sharma to Latasil ground, famous for hosting Bihu programmes at this time of the year, where she said that in the Assamese culture, social interactions hold as much importance as any other. Likewise, the former CM said, cutting across political lines, this is how cordial relations between fellow politicians should be.

Similarly, grooving to Bihu geets, BJP’s Oja said that she wants people to see her as a normal person, and not just a politician.

Although the political atmosphere is quite heated right now, Bihu has come right before the second phase of voting, to be held on April 18, to add a bit of fervour to electioneering in Assam.

Bihu, the chief festival of the state which marks the Assamese New Year, is celebrated with dhol, pepa and Bihu geets, where women are seen donning mekhela chador, a traditional attire, and men in Indian attire wear the phulam gamusa as a symbol of Assamese pride, and relish delicacies.
