FIR lodged against Sanbor Shullai for alleged misconduct inside polling station

Shillong: Sanbor Shullai, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) candidate from Shillong Lok Sabha seat, on Thursday said that he would rather “kill himself than allow” the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill to be implemented in Meghalaya and other Northeastern states.

While speaking to media persons after casting his vote in Shillong on Thursday, Shullai said, “The Citizenship Amendment Bill will not be implemented as long as Sanbor Shullai is alive. I will kill myself. I will commit suicide than allow the Bill to be implemented in Meghalaya and the Northeast.”

The former deputy speaker of Meghalaya Assembly also added that he doesn’t have any problem if the Bill is implemented in any other part of the country.

The BJP’s manifesto for 2019 has made it very clear that it will pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in both the houses of Parliament, if it returns to power at the Centre for a second term.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh in a recent press briefing was seen reading out the manifesto where he pointed out that the Bill will be passed keeping in mind the interests of the indigenous people.

However, senior BJP leaders from Meghalaya such as state health minister AL Hek and Shullai have been maintaining a firm stand in opposing the draconian Bill that puts the interests of the indigenous people at risk.

Meanwhile, in a fresh development, an FIR has been lodged against Shullai under Section 132 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 by the presiding officer and returning officer of Shillong constituency for alleged misconduct inside a polling station on Thursday.

FR Kharkongor, the chief electoral officer of Meghalaya, said that there was a communication gap and the candidates were not supposed to give a press briefing inside the polling stations and their conduct was expected to be in order and peaceful.

The Election Commission in a recent move had issued a show-cause notice to minister Hek for violation of model code of conduct by using an office vehicle while campaigning for Shullai in Jaintia Hills.
