Guwahati: Manipur-based journalist Kishorechandra Wangkhem was finally released on Wednesday after spending over three months in jail. The release came after the Manipur High Court ordered to revoke the journalist’s detention under the National Security Act (NSA) earlier this month.
In November last year, Wangkhem, a former staffer of the ISTV Network, was booked under the NSA for uploading a video in which he criticised chief minister N Biren Singh over a function organised on the birth anniversary of Rani of Jhansi on November 19.
Less than 24 hours after he was granted bail by a CJM court in West Imphal on November 26, following his arrest on November 20, Wangkhem was arrested again on November 27, under section 294 and 500 of IPC in addition to section 124A, which deals with sedition.
Recently, agitators had assembled in New York making an appeal to the Indian government and demanding the journalist’s immediate and unconditional release.
