How Naga locals showed their humane side by rescuing elephant calf

Kohima: Locals of Sanis town in Nagaland’s Wokha district on Sunday showed their humane side by rescuing an elephant calf that had strayed from its herd near a jungle in the area. Residents were helped by volunteers of Green-SONS, a local NGO.

As per Green-SONS chairman Jess Murry, locals heard a loud electrical spark around 8.30 pm on Saturday. They also heard the trumpeting of fleeing elephants. When a team comprising volunteers and local youths went to inspect the area later in the morning on Sunday, they found the calf wandering alone.

The herd might have abandoned the calf during the electrical spark, said Murry. It is also suspected that some of the elephants in the herd might have got electrocted as well, although this could not be confirmed immediately.

The calf was later taken to Sanis town to be handed over to the department concerned and take steps to unite the baby elephant with its herd.
