Aizawl: While political parties are engaged in allegations and counter-allegation over trivial issues, diverting the real issues, a survey has revealed that better employment opportunities, better hospitals/primary healthcare centres and better roads are the key three priorities of voters in Mizoram.
As per the survey conducted by an election watchdog, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), 67.69% of voters rated the performance of the government in terms of employment opportunities as poor. The report said that 53.04% of voters stated better hospitals/primary healthcare centres as their priorities, while 44.04% want better roads.
The survey was conducted between October and December last year and covered 500 respondents across Mizoram.
The performance of the erstwhile Lal Thanhawla-led Congress government on all top three voters’ priorities of better employment opportunities (2.06 on a scale of 5), better hospitals/ primary healthcare centres (1.98) and better roads (1.99) was rated as below average.
In rural areas, voters were concerned about employment (69%), healthcare (55%), and agriculture loan availability (47%) and the government performance was rated below average on these. On a scale of 5, it scored 2.07 on employment, 2.05 on healthcare facilities and 1.96 on availability of agriculture loan in rural areas, the report said.
“In addition, the government has performed poorly in providing better Roads (2.04) and agriculture subsidy for seeds and fertilisers (2.09) in rural Mizoram,” it added.
The report said that employment opportunities was the top most priority of voters in urban areas which tagged at 69%, followed by healthcare facilities at 52% and better road at 43%.
On a scale of 5, the performance of the government on urban voters’ priorities of better employment opportunities (2.05 on a scale of 5), better hospitals/ primary healthcare centres (1.94), and better Roads (1.97) was rated as below average, the report stated.
In addition, the government has performed poorly in providing better public transport facilities (2.1) and on empowerment of women and security (2.12) in urban Mizoram, it added.
