CPI-M announced an open rally on Saturday afternoon to condemn the ongoing attacks on the opposition leaders.

Agartala: Lashing out at the ruling party and Tripura police administration, CPI-M state secretary Goutam Das on Friday squarely accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “murdering democratic rights” of the opposition parties in the state.

Das claimed that the ruling faction, BJP-Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) has fostered a terror-like situation in the state, and is not letting political parties organise any election related events in the state. He added, “…After coming to power since March 3 last [year]…the ruling party cadres are involved in terrorising and attacking while police stand as mute spectator.”

The CPI-M state secretary said that after the announcement of Lok Sabha election, the state BJP cadres are attacking opposition party leaders in rural areas throughout the state, and over a dozen complaints were filed by the opposition to the Election Commission.

“The CPIM candidate of West Tripura seat Sankar Prasad Datta who is moving [travelling] for campaigning in Gomati, Sepahijala and South Tripura districts were attacked for four times”, he added.

Condemning BJP for allegedly facilitating these attacks, Das said that the former chief minister and leader of opposition Manik Sarkar pre-planned schedule to hold meeting at Birchandramanu, Taibandal and Mohanbhog, but CPI-M supporters were threatened not to visit his meeting by the apparent BJP goons.

“Moreover, the ruling party hooligans attacked TTAADC EM Parikshit Murasingh at Birchandra Manu on March 27, however, they left as villagers resisted firmly. Deputy Opposition Leader Badal Choudhury was attacked at Paschim Baikhora when he went to see a CPI-M worker,[who] passed away”, he added.

Likewise, the ruling party is not allowing opposition to hold poll campaign programmes mainly in Kamalpur, said Das. He added that the alleged BJP goons are creating a nuisance by interrupting CPI-M candidate Jitendra Choudhury’s campaign for East Tripura seat. Choudhury was stopped at Srirampur last Thursday. Das also condemned the recent attack on Congress candidate Subal Bhowmik.

Slamming Modi government for collapsing the unity in diversity in the entire country and now it is seen in Tripura, he allegedly asserted that the BJP state president and chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb is threatening to teach the opposition lesson. People are offended with the rule of BJP-IPFT government. They are likely to lose in the ensuing general election if a peaceful, free and fair election doesn’t take place.
