Aizawl: Mizoram information and public relations minister and Mizo National Front (MNF) general secretary Lalruatkima on Friday lambasted opposition Congress over the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
Addressing a party meeting at the MNF office in Aizawl, Lalruatkima said that the citizenship bill had become dangerous for Mizoram because of the Congress government’s laxity to curb influx of illegal immigrants during its 10 years rule.
“The Congress government did not take any measure to either prevent the influx of illegal immigrants from foreign countries or identify them. No efforts have been taken in view of the foreigners during Congress rule,” he alleged.
Lalruatkima pointed out that the state legislature has recently passed “The Mizoram Maintenance of Household Registers Bill, 2019,” to detect and identify illegal immigrants from neighbouring foreign countries.
He said that the proposed law will facilitate registration of genuine residents of the state and identification of illegal immigrants. “If such a law had been framed and implemented during Congress rule, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill could have been much less dangerous,” he said.
The minister also said that the present government headed by chief minister Zoramthanga has strongly opposed to the citizenship bill. He said that the cabinet and state assembly had passed resolutions declaring their stiff opposition to the bill, which the BJP tried to re-introduced, if returns to power.
He further alleged that the Congress government did not inform Delhi about its opposition to the bill during its 10 years rule.
