Aizawl: Expressing their disapproval to a bid to include Darlawn area under the proposed Saitaul district, people of the area reiterated their demands for the creation of a new Darlawn district.
Darlawn is currently located in Aizawl district, about 114 km northeast of the state capital.
A leader of Darlawn District Demand Committee (DDDC), an organisation which spearheaded the movement for creation of new district, told EastMojo that a meeting of all political parties and NGOs in Darlawn town, which was convened recently, has unanimously resolved to take massive effort for the creation of separate Darlawn district and installation of district headquarters in the town.
The meeting expressed its unequivocal opposition to inclusion of northeastern part of Mizoram including Darlawn under the proposed Saitual district and resolve to oppose such move, he said.
He added that the meeting passed a resolution demanding the state government to create new district for development of northeastern part of the state adjoining Manipur.
Keeping in view the geographical area, the meeting said Darlawn deserves district headquarters. The leader said that creation of Darlawn district was a long standing demand, which began in 1988.
In April last year, over 3,000 people hit the street in Darlawn town demanding the creation of new district.
The proposed Darlawn district comprises of 41 villages, more than 40,000 people and over 8,000 houses in three assembly constituencies — Tuivawl, Chalfilh and Serlui — in the northeastern part of the state bordering Assam and Manipur. It covers 1,500-sq-km area.
In 2008, the erstwhile Mizo National Front (MNF) government announced the creation of three districts — Saitual, Hnathial and Khawzawl, which remained non-functional till date after Congress came to power between 2008 and 2018.
Implementation of the three districts was one of the main poll agendas of MNF before the state assembly polls held on November 28 last year.
In the state interim budget tabled by chief minister as well as finance minister Zoramthanga in the recently concluded budget session, the state government has allocated Rs 150 lakh each for implementation of Saitual, Khawzawl and Hnathial districts.
Meanwhile, people of Hnathial held a thanksgiving progamme on Saturday during which they expressed gratitude to the government for allocating fund for implementation of the district.
