Aizawl: Two neighbouring states Mizoram and Assam have agreed to maintain peace and tranquility along the inter-state borders, an official said on Thursday.

He said that a high-level meeting of deputy commissioners and police officials of Mizoram’s Mamit and Kolasib districts and Assam’s Hailakandi was held at CRPF headquarters in Gharmura in Hailakandi district on Wednesday to deliberate about measures for maintaining peace and harmony along the inter-state border.

The meeting agreed not to construct any structure by both sides along the border area especially at the disputed Zophai area to avoid misunderstanding and maintain peace and tranquility along the border, he said.

The development came days after the influential Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) decided to make yet another attempt to construct a resting shed at Zophai near Bairabi town in Kolasib district along the inter-state boundary.

The official said that the meeting was held under conducive atmosphere.

Both sides agreed to maintain law and order in stricter manner along the inter-state border and take combine efforts to find out people in the case of violation of law, he said.

The meeting also deliberated about joint effort to prevent smuggling of arms, drugs, alcohol and fake currency into either sides of the borders and also agreed to conduct joint patrolling to ensure peaceful conduct of Lok Sabha election along the borders.

Tension had erupted at Zophai when MZP functionaries attempted to reconstruct a resting shed, which was dismantled by Assam police few days after its construction in March last year.

MZP alleged that more than 60 students and several journalists were injured when Assam police resorted to firing and lathi charge to disperse the students.

A joint committee, constituted by Assam and Mizoram under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) thereafter inspected illegal structures along a disputed stretch of the 64.6 km border between the two states.

The joint survey was suspended on 18 April last year following a dispute at zero point in Dholchera-Phaisen area.
