Aizawl: The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) candidate C Lalrosanga on Tuesday filed nomination for the lone Lok Sabha seat to become the first among contesting candidates to do so for the upcoming parliamentary polls.
Election to the lone Lok Sabha seat in Mizoram will be held simultaneously with assembly by-election to Aizawl West-I seat on April 1.
Although four candidates have been named, the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in the state this time will see five candidates as BJP is yet to name its contender.
While Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM)-Congress combine has fielded football icon Lalnghinglova Hmar, the newly floated People Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) projected a business man TBC Lalbenchhunga.
A retired deputy controller of mines Lalhriatrenga Chhangte from central Mizoram’s Serchhip town is also contesting the polls as independent.
Speaking to reporters after filing nomination, Lalrosanga said he would give priority to all-round development of the state especially focusing on road, health, education sectors and development of the youths especially the educated ones by promoting entrepreneurship and skill development.
He alleged that development was on “holiday” during 10 years of Congress rule.
Lalrosanga said that he would also give priority to resolving inter-state border dispute with Assam and also work for protection of the rights of the Mizos as well as integration of all Mizo communities living in different parts of the country and the globe.
The former director general of Doordarshan said he would strongly oppose to a bid to pass Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. He expressed confidence that he will win the polls as he has the support of the people, whom he is representing.
State sports minister Robert Romawia Royte, who accompanied Lalrosanga said the party’s prospect is high because of the difference within the opposition ZPM-Congress combine.
He alleged that many party workers of Congress and ZPM were not happy with their candidate. “Though the ZPM-Congress combine candidate Lalnghinglova Hmar appears to be a formidable opponent, the ruling MNF has ample chance of winning the polls by projecting a renowned retired officer as in Mizoram the ruling party has usually won the Lok Sabha polls,” he said.
In 2014 Lok Sabha poll, Royte, who was projected by the United Democratic Front (UDF) formed by eight opposition parties including the MNF lost to the ruling Congress nominee CL Ruala.
