Gangtok: Kicking off his campaign for the upcoming state assembly elections, Sikkim chief minister Pawan Kumar Champling on Saturday said that he is “100% confident” that his party, Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), will come to power for a record sixth consecutive term.

Chamling embarked upon his election campaign on Saturday morning by travelling in a Savari taxi from Gangtok to Namchi, his home constituency. He said, “I am 100% confident that the coming government will be of the SDF party. We will work more in the next government to fulfill the aspirations of the people of Sikkim. The next government will be more pro-people and run on the agendas of the people.”

The SDF chief said that his party is resorting to a different type of campaign this time around. He will be reaching out to the masses through roads as well as by visiting the homes of voters across Sikkim.

“I am starting my campaign by moving around in a taxi as I am a leader of the common people. We have started our campaign from today. The SDF election campaign across the state is being done in a scientific manner while taking into [consideration] the opinion of the people. We are doing our campaign with the agenda of the people, we are not imposing our thoughts on the people during the campaign… the campaign will be pro-people and scientific as per their wishes,” said the SDF president.

Chamling urged the party cadres to go door to door of voters and interact with them to prepare the agendas and programmes of the upcoming SDF government. "The programmes and agendas prepared by you will be implemented within 100 days of forming the government,” Chamling told the gathering at Lall Bazaar, from where he boarded the Savari taxi.

Further, the CM said that the next and final list of SDF candidates will be declared very soon. On Friday, the party had released a list of candidates for 18 constituencies, as per which Chamling will be contesting from Poklok-Kamrang and Namchi-Singhithang constituencies. Also, 10 new faces have featured in the list. However, there appears to be some dissidence within the party workers regarding the list as understood through social media posts.

Answering to the buzz of internal hustle, Chamling said, there will be “teething problems” wherever any new work starts and that is why such comments are appearing. On the new faces, the CM said, the party is undergoing creative parivartan to prepare for a new leadership for the future.

Chamling urged the people to take the 2019 assembly election “very seriously” as this election is to “save Sikkim”. “Sikkim janta must not hand over Sikkim to goons. We must not give the charge of Sikkim to those having roots outside the state as they will ruin Sikkim. The rule of Sikkimese must be maintained to protect the rights of Sikkimese and the old laws of Sikkim,” added Chamling.

Chamling accused the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) party of selling party tickets to the candidates. “First they sold the MLA tickets and after that, they sold the party. If Sikkim falls into the hands of such persons, they will sell Sikkim and ruin the future of the Sikkimese. Hence, people should be very careful and take this election very seriously. We must stay united and make SDF victorious to save Sikkim,” he said.
