Creation of the three districts -- Saitual, Hnathial and Khawzawl -- was announced by the previous Mizo National Front government in 2008
Aizawl: The Mizoram government will soon make three districts, announced by the erstwhile MNF government, functional, chief minister Zoramthanga, who also holds the portfolio of general administration, informed the state legislature on Thursday.
Replying to a question from VL Zaithanzama of opposition Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Zoramthanga said the state government is taking massive effort to soon materialise the functioning of three districts -- Saitual, Hnathial and Khawzawl.
Zoramthanga said that the creation of the three districts was announced by the previous MNF government in 2008. He added the government would soon accord full-fledged district headquarters to Saitual, Khawzawl and Hnathial.
Implementation of the new districts was the poll plank of the ruling MNF, which helped the party to sweep assembly polls in November last year.
Currently, Saitual in located in Aizawl district, Hnathial in Lunglei district and Khawzawl in Champhai district. The people of these areas have been demanding district status for about 40 years.
Zoramthanga had earlier alleged that the erstwhile Congress government failed to accord full-fledged district status to Saitual, Khawzawl and Hnathial because they were announced by MNF government.
He had said that the MNF is committed to its pre-poll promises and would fulfill the aspirations of the people.
