Bengaluru: A 31-year-old software engineer Amlan Barman from Assam allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the 13th floor of his office building in Bengaluru. Barman was working with an IT-services company Mphasis and jumped off a window of the office cafeteria in Bagmane MTB Techpark, Mahadevapura Ring Road, on Thursday. He was reportedly said to be depressed over some health issues.

As per the police, Barman, a native of Assam, was in the cafeteria during lunch hour. His colleagues were having lunch when he jumped out of the window at 1.45pm.

The police also said that Barman was undergoing treatment for epilepsy. Police suspect that it was the same reason for which he had had to take such an extreme step. His mother, Shikha Barman, also suspected her son's health complications to be behind the incident.

Barman posted a message on his Facebook page on February 11 that read, “Every night I go to sleep, hoping that the next morning, I will feel better… the next morning, I get up and feel like the hope was like searching for a blue lotus..”

While the post shared by Barman indicated that there was something that was bothering him, preliminary investigation revealed that he had taken an overdose of tablets prescribed for epilepsy on Monday night and had to be admitted to a private hospital. He was on leave for two days and returned to work on Thursday morning.

"His colleagues said Barman looked dull and depressed in the morning before he went to the cafeteria and jumped from a window," a police officer said.

Barman was born in Assam and later moved to Meghalaya and West Bengal, where he completed his education. He shifted to Bengaluru along with his mother a year ago after getting a job with Mphasis.
