Guwahati: When Reyaz Ahmed came to Assam in 1972, little did he realise that his humble two-seater salon that he set up in the heart of Guwahati city in Assam will become a landmark one day.
Today, his Reyaz Hair Clinic, located on the busy B Borooah Road in the city, is a name to reckon with. From sportsmen to musicians and film actors, his skilled hands have styled the tresses of many.
“I don’t remember when I first came to Assam… I guess it was in 1972, but honestly I don’t remember at all. I didn’t even have a roof over my head at that time… where I’ll stay, eat, sleep… I had to worry about it all,” he says.
But destiny surely had other plans for him.
Once, he sent his most accomplished craftsmen to the Brahmaputra Hotel when cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly were in the city for a match and wanted special hair services.
Reyaz fondly remembers, “It was a very good experience. I got a lot of praises.”
Well, his fan base is not limited to cricketers alone; ministers, bureaucrats, actors, well, the list goes on.
“If I start telling you the number of clients I’ve had, the list will take at least 3-4 days. People from all walks of life visit my salon.”
So, what is his mantra of success? “Hard work and good behaviour,” he said with a disarming smile.
Nowadays Reyaz’s son, Raju Reyaz, is looking after the salon along with him. For Raju, his father is an inspiration and he wants to take the brand ahead.
Reyaz can’t be happier. “I have pulled the car so far and now it will be their duty to take the car forward from here.”
He signs off with a ‘shayari’, giving a glimpse of his creative self: “Aaina jhooth nahi bolta, par yeh bhi sach hai ki log waise nahi hai jaise nazar aate hai.” (Mirrors don’t lie but it is also true that appearance can be deceptive)
Truly, the story of Reyaz Ahmed is an inspiration… a result of hard work and determination over time.
