After ruling Sikkim Democratic Front blames Sikkim Krantikari Morcha for inciting violence in Jorethang recently, the opposition party demands ‘proof of its involvement’
Gangtok: Close on the heels of the 2019 assembly elections in Sikkim, political rough and tumble has begun, with both the ruling and opposition parties launching scathing attacks at each other. After the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) blamed the opposition Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) for inciting violence in the recently held Maghey Mela in Jorethang, SKM has demanded a “proof of their involvement in the incident, and name each one of those involved”.
In a presser, SKM spokesperson Jacob Khaling said, “If they fail to name our members, it would signify that these law breakers are actually from the ruling SDF itself.”
On January 17, the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRBn) allegedly resorted to lathicharge and tear gas shells after a reported argument broke out between some stall owners at the Maghey Mela held in Jorethang, leaving several severely injured.
Meanwhile, upping the ante in an already acrimonious political slugfest between the two major parties of the Himalayan state, leaders of the SKM’s women’s wing, Nari Shakti, submitted a memorandum to the National Women Commission (NCW) on Tuesday against chief minister Pawan Kumar Chamling’s allegedly derogatory remarks on women’s menstrual cycle on December 5.
The seven-member team headed by Kala Rai, convenor, and Pabitra Bhandari, general secretary, submitted a memorandum to NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma at her office in New Delhi.
Nari Shakti has accused Chamling of outraging the modesty of women by calling them untouchable during periods. “The SKM Nari Shakti had visited Sadar police station on January 15 to lodge a FIR against CM Chamling but a general diary was lodged,” stated Kala Rai. Nari shakti also submitted the complaint at the Sikkim State Women Commission on January 16.
She further added, “The chairperon has assured us that the commission shall send notice to Gangtok police and then to chief minister Pawan Chamling at the earliest.”
SKM Nari Shakti is also likely to hold a rally against CM Chamling in Gangtok on January 29.
