Gangtok: Demanding immediate withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, Sikkim United Front (SUF) has asked the Lok Sabha MP of Sikkim, PD Rai, to withdraw his support to the controversial bill in the interest of the people of the state.
Addressing a press conference here, the SUF stated that implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 is a threat to the rights and interests of indigenous communities of Sikkim.
SUF president Narendra Adhikari said that the Bill is of a grave concern and sensitive matter in context of a small state like Sikkim, which has a population of just over 7 lakh. The existence of indigenous communities of Sikkim will face danger if the bill is implemented in the state. “Lok Sabha MP PD Rai has to withdraw his support towards the bill,” he demanded.
Alleging the ruling SDF government of maintaining double standard, Adhikari further said, “While the government had curtailed government jobs in the past and encouraged youths to explore private jobs and entrepreneurship but now, offering jobs to 20,000 youths is nothing but entirely a double standard.”
