Shillong: Protests staged to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 took an ugly turn in East Jaintia Hills after a bus carrying a team from Odisha, which was on its way to aid in the rescue operations of trapped miners in Ksan village, was attacked on Friday.

As per East Jaintia Hills SP Sylvester Nongtynger, although no one sustained injuries, the vehicle was partially damaged.

The bus was targeted on the highway in East Jaintia Hills district following which the police escorted it, said police officials.

Protests have been reported from several places in the northeast region against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill that seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
