Guwahati: True and False, a play based on one of the works of famous UK-based playwright Rob Drummond, was staged in Guwahati on Friday evening. The play, directed by Rohan Kr Das and produced by Pallavi Chumki Barua, portrays a world of reality game shows and explored notions of truth and falsehood.
The first show of True and False was staged at Pragjyotish ITA, Machkhowa in Guwahati on Friday. The next show is slated for Saturday at the same venue.
The cast of the play, made under the banner of Ruby Visions and Bob Barua Benefaction, includes eminent film and theatre personalities including Jit Chaliha, Ranjeev Lal Barua, Neetali Das, Lima Das and Pratyush Barua. All proceeds from the play would go to Bob Barua Benefaction, a trust that is working towards uplifting the status of the marginalised sections of society.
Terming the play as a mix between Kaun Banega Crorepati and Bigg Boss, director Das said, “It was overwhelming to direct this play with a cast where everyone has their own set of benchmarks. The audience’s reaction and appreciation today has encouraged us to come up with more such work in the future.”
Barua, the producer of the play, said, “This play was my late husband’s dream and I am glad I could fulfill it. This is the first theatre production of Ruby Visions and this is my contribution towards theatre.”
Talking about the difficulty in finding sponsors for her play, Barua said, “It was not at all easy for me to find sponsors for the play. I started approaching sponsors in the month of July and till yesterday I was tensed about it. But, I thank all my friends who came forward and helped me in executing this idea.”
Technology played a very important role in the play which kept the audience engaged with a live quiz show. The play leads the audience to identify with the many contemporary social and topical issues of everyday life. The spectator enters into a hair-raising ‘live’ arena where a quizmaster hustles neurotic participants, camera-ready faces, fake smiles and concocted realities. Jit Chaliha plays the role of a quiz-master, Brien O’ Neil; Ranjeev Lal Barua enacts the role of psychiatrist Irfan Ahmed, a participant in the show; Neetali Das plays the character of Meera Singhania, who portrays a former quiz show champion. Lima Das plays the lead character of Sandra Braganza, a housewife; and the character of the show’s production manager Pratiek Duggal is played by Pratyush Barua.
