Guwahati: Call it a matter of pride or a moment of embarrassment, Dilwar Hussain, who was arrested twice for his alleged involvement in rhino poaching, has won the gaon panchayat (GP) president’s seat from Suwaguri in Biswanath district on a Congress ticket.

However, Ganesh Doley, an Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidate who also served a jail term for his alleged involvement in rhino poaching, lost the Moridhansiri GP seat in Golaghat district to a BJP candidate.

Counting of votes for the panchayat elections in Assam continued for the second day on Thursday. The ruling BJP is leading the tally ahead of the Congress, AGP and the AIUDF.

Earlier, there was widespread protest among party workers after both the Congress and the AGP decided to give tickets to the suspected rhino poachers to contest from their respective GPs in the panchayat elections.

Hussain is alleged to be involved in the killing of a rhino in the Kaziranga National Park on December 13, 2011. A case has been registered against him at the Biswanath Chariali police station. Hussain has also been linked to the killing of a rhino at Bagori in Kaziranga. He was even jailed over poaching activities.

Similarly, Doley was first arrested in 2012 for his alleged involvement in a rhino poaching incident in Kaziranga National Park. A case was registered at Rongmongwe police station in Karbi Anglong district after the police arrested Doley along with an accomplice for their alleged involvement in the crime. The police had also recovered one .32 pistol with four rounds of ammunition, a .303 gun and a .303 rifle with several rounds of ammunition from their possession. Doley was again arrested by the police in 2014 under the Wildlife Protection Act and the Arms Act. He is currently out on bail.
