27-year-old Surendra Barman had been fighting to prove his citizenship for over a year now; was to appear for a hearing on Monday, the day he ended his life
Guwahati: A youth from Kokrajhar district’s Srirampur area hanged himself on Monday reportedly over humiliation after being declared as a doubtful or dubious voter (D voter).
D voter is a category of voters in Assam who are disenfranchised by the government on the account of their alleged lack of proper citizenship credentials. The D voters are determined by special tribunals under the Foreigners Act, and the person declared as D voter is not given an elector's identity card.
As per reports, 27-year-old Surendra Barman was to appear for a hearing in the case on Monday at the foreigners’ tribunal in Kokrajhar but “could not tolerate persecution in the name of D-voter”, said one of his neighbours on condition of anonymity.
The incident created a stir in Srirampur as the local people refused to perform his last rites. Protesters raised slogans against the government and its nature of working over D voters. Later, the district administration assured that it would conduct an investigation into the incident.
As per reports, Barman was fighting his case for over a year now since he was notified as a D-voter.
Barman is survived by his 13-old-sister. His parents died a few years ago.
