New Delhi: Indian boxer from Manipur L Sarita Devi and rookie Manisha Mouna started their campaigns on a high at the ongoing AIBA women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi on Friday.
While Manisha stunned two-time bronze medallist Christina Cruz of the USA, Sarita Devi defeated Diana Sandra Brugger of Switzerland 4-0 in their respective bouts.
2006 champion Sarita (60kg) was made to work hard for her 4-0 victory on points against her Swiss opponent in her opening bout at the KD Jadhav Stadium.
Both Sarita and Manisha advanced to the pre-quarterfinals where they will face Kellie Herrington of Ireland and Dina Zholaman of Kazakhstan, respectively, on Sunday.
The Manipuri boxer has been competing in the World Championships since the first edition in 2001.
Sarita dedicated the win to the people of Manipur who had contributed financially to pay the fine after she was banned for one year in 2014 following the Incheon Asian Games controversy in which she refused to accept the bronze medal at the victory ceremony.
