Tripura: Malaria claims another child’s life in north district

8-year-old girl dies on her way to the district hospital in Kanchanpur

Agartala: An eight-year-old girl has become the latest victim of malaria in North Tripura district. The victim, Naisebati Reang, died on her way to the Kanchanpur district hospital after she was referred from the Bhandarima hospital.

Talking to EastMojo, sub-divisional medical officer (SDMO) Naresh Tripura said the child was brought dead. "We couldn’t provide any kind of treatment to the girl,” he said, adding: “Asha (referring to the ‘accredited social health activists’) workers never visit the villages and the remote areas of the district although all the required kits and medicines are provided to all of them.”

He had earlier informed the department in written to terminate those workers himself but no action were taken in due time.

Reang’s death comes a fortnight after a five-year-old child died of malaria in the Dhalai district of Tripura. The deceased, Rakesh, was shifted to the Dhalai district hospital after his condition deteriorated at the Ambassa primary health centre, where he was undergoing treatment.

With this, the death toll in the recent outbreak of malaria in the state has risen to 10.

On October 14, another child -- a five-year-old boy -- died of the disease in Gandacherra area of Dhalai district in Tripura.
