Agartala: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MLA Narayan Chandra Chowdhury was allegedly attacked by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers at Gokulnagar area of Sepahijala district on Friday.
The vehicle, in which the MLA from Kamalasagar constituency was travelling, was also completely damaged by the attackers, as per reports.
The incident took place just a day after at least 65 people, including 12 police personnel, were injured when BJP workers started pelting stones at the elected CPI-M Zila Parishad members in Belonia in South Tripura district.
The BJP workers were trying stop the CPI-M leaders, who were on their way to the district magistrate’s office to take oath as members of the South Tripura Zilla Parishad. Police resorted to fire tear-gas shells to disperse hundreds of BJP workers.
The oath-taking ceremony of the elected Zila Parishad members was later shifted to the DM’s office.
The incident reportedly happened in front of the SP’s office when more than hundred BJP workers blocked the road and started pelting stones at the CPI-M leaders as well as police personnel.
CPI-M veteran leader and MP from East Tripura Jitendra Chaudhury alleged that BJP MLA from Belonia constituency and south district president Arun Chandra Bhwomik led the saffron party workers to attack the CPI-M leaders.
Chaudhury accused the BJP of trying to kill its leaders and said: “If police personal were not escorting the CPI-M workers, then at least six party leaders would have been killed.”
Reacting to the incident, the veteran leader demanded the arrest of the BJP MLA. He also appreciated the police for protecting the lives of CPI-M leaders.
“The BJP goons are trying to suppress the opposition and have a one-party system which we strongly condemn,” said Chaudhury.
However, MLA Arun Bhowmik said, “Clashes could have been avoided if the SP and DM had cancelled the programme.” The BJP MLA also said that the SP and the DM were not experienced enough; so they could not estimate the gravity of the situation.
“At present the CPI-M has only five elected members in the Zilla Parishad and the BJP is eyeing those seats also which is against the democracy”, alleged deputy leader of CPI-M Badal Chowdhury.
Meanwhile, the police have registered suo moto FIR against the stone pelters.
