Official secretly trying to enrol 218 Brus from the Tripura transit camps in Mizoram’s voter list, alleges apex students’ body
Aizawl: The Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) has given a deadline till 5 pm on Tuesday for Kolasib deputy commissioner (DC) Arun T to step down from his post. Arun has been accused of secretly trying to enrol 218 Brus from the Tripura transit camps in Mizoram’s voter list.
Speaking to EastMojo, Lalnunmawia Pautu, general secretary of the apex students’ body in Mizoram, said: “If the authorities concerned fail to meet our demands of removing Arun T from the post of DC, the government should be ready to face the repercussions.”
The MZP also urged the Election Commission to stick to its promise made to the Mizoram government in April 2014 and demanded that SB Shashank should not be reinstated to the post of CEO in the state.
Meanwhile, in the context of certain elements trying to make Brus exercise their voting rights from the relief camps in Tripura, Ricky Lalbiakmawia, finance secretary of the Northeast Students’ Organisation (NESO), said, “The citizens of all states should cast their votes from their respective states.”
Thousands of Bru community members had fled Mizoram after ethnic clashes in October 1997 and have been living in camps in Tripura since then.
More than 40,000 people under the banner of NGO Coordination Committee had been protesting in Aizawl and picketing in front of the controversial CEO Shashank’s office for being an alleged Bru sympathiser and demanding his immediate removal.
Election to the 40-member Mizoram Assembly will be held on November 28. The counting of votes will be held on December 11.
