Rs 3 crore demanded as ransom for abducted employee of tea estate in Namsai district owned by former MLA Nang Sati Mein
Guwahati: A tea garden employee was kidnapped by suspected militants of the United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I) from Piyong in Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday evening.
The victim, identified as Deborata Dev, is a storekeeper at the Sati Tea Estate in Chenglai Namsai.
According to reports, a seven-member group belonging to the banned ULFA(I) allegedly abducted Dev from the tea garden owned by former MLA Nang Sati Mein, who is also the wife of Arunachal Pradesh deputy CM Chowna Mein.
As per the police, the cadres came to the tea garden under the cover of darkness, dressed in camouflage and armed with sophisticated weapons, on Saturday evening. While leaving the spot, they demanded a ransom of Rs 3 crore. They asked a staffer at the tea estate to convey the message to Chowna Mein and his wife Sati Mein.
An FIR was lodged at the Namsai police station the same day in connection with the incident and a case has been registered under Sections 364(A), 365 of the IPC and Section 25(A) of the Arms Act. Police investigations are on.
