Kohima: Veteran politician, former Nagaland minister and a four-time MLA from Shamator-Chessore Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC), K Yamükam passed away in Zion Hospital, Dimapur on Friday.
Apart from his political career with Indian National Congress (INC) and National People’s Congress (NPC), late Yamükam was also responsible for founding the Sangphur Students’ Union and also rendered his services to the Yimchunger community as executive member, Yimchunger Tribal Council (YTC) and later as its advisor.
Being a popular leader, Yamükam was elected consecutively for four times from 1989 to 2003 from Shamator-Chessore LAC.
He also served as Nagaland minister of state for soil and water conservation, sericulture (1993) and minister for horticulture, sericulture, relief and rehabilitation (1998).
Expressing sadness over the veteran politician’s demise, Nagaland chief minister, Neiphiu Rio said, “The late leader was a simple and down-to-earth leader who was known for relentlessly raising the voice of the people he represented in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.”
Yamükam was also the father of advisor of SCERT, IPR and Village Guards, Toshi Wungtung.
Recollecting his memories of Yamükam, Rio added, “I was fortunate to have been colleagues with late Yamükam in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly over the last few terms and I personally found him to be a leader who had deep concern for all sections of the people, particularly those belonging the marginalised ones.”
Rio further added, “He was one of the most respected leaders as he was a man of integrity and commitment. The state has lost a people’s leader and a fatherly figure who will be remembered fondly.”
