Elections to be conducted for 420 zila parishad members, 2,199 gram panchayat presidents and 21,990 gram panchayat members on December 5 and 9
Guwahati: The Assam State Election Commission on Monday declared the dates for the panchayat polls that are to be held in two phases, on December 5 and 9, in the state.
The state will elect a total of 420 zila parishad members, 2,199 gram panchayat presidents and 21,990 gram panchayat members.
In the ensuing panchayat polls, 1,56,41,456 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise. Of these, 81,23,835 are male and 75,17,621 are female voters.
For the first phase of elections, which is scheduled on December 5, the last date for filing of nomination papers has been fixed on November 15. For the second phase of polls, the last date of filling of nominations is November 19. Withdrawal of nominations for the two phases is November 19 and 22, respectively.
The election commission has fixed the polling hours from 7 am to 3 pm on poll day. The commission will publish the list of contesting candidates on November 19 and 22 for the two phases, respectively.
In the first phase, 16 districts will go to polls, while in the second, the rest of the ten districts will go to polls.
The election commission also revealed that around 1,56,255 officials and staff are required for the polls. The polls will be held in 23,505 polling stations across the state. Of these, 11,597 have been identified as comparatively safe, 8,243 as sensitive and 3,665 as very sensitive polling stations.
The panchayat elections will be conducted using ballot papers and ballot boxes. The state election commissioner told that the requisite number of ballot boxes has already been made available to the deputy commissioners or the sub-divisional officer (civil).
With the announcement of polls, state election commissioner HN Bora said the model code of conduct has come into force in all areas where panchayat polls will be held.
The counting of votes for both the phases of elections will be taken up on December 12, from 8 am onwards.
