Guwahati: As part of its nationwide protests against the Centre’s move to send Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief Alok Verma on leave, the Congress party staged demonstrations in several parts of the Northeast on Friday.
In Guwahati, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) organised a massive protest in front of the CBI office at Gorchuk area on Friday. Former chief minister Tarun Gogoi led the protest which was also participated by senior party leaders like Debabrata Saikia and Ripun Bora, among others.
Coming down heavily on the BJP, the APCC leaders further alleged that the Centre is trying to cover up the Rafale scam by divesting CBI chief Alok Verma. The party also demanded the immediate reinstatement of Verma as the director of the premier investigating agency.
The Congress has slammed the government for what it says is the “illegal, unconstitutional and illegitimate removal of the CBI director”. The government has sent Verma and his deputy Rakesh Asthana on forced leave after both of them accused each other of taking bribe from the same businessman.
The Assam Congress has also sent a memorandum to the President of India seeking his intervention into the matter.
In Agartala, Congress party workers in large numbers gheroed the CBI office on Friday. The protest was led by All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Bhupen Kumar Borah and participated by state Congress president Birjit Sinha and working president Pradyot Debbarman, among other senior leaders.

Criticising the BJP for playing politics to gain their vested interest, the former Manipur also demanded immediate reinstatement of the CBI director.
