Birpara, West Bengal: In a tragic road accident, a New Zealand national was killed near Birpara area of Alipurduar district of West Bengal when his two-wheeler was hit by a mini-truck on Wednesday evening. The deceased, identified as Shawn Michel (50), was part of a biker group and was en route to Kaziranga National Park in Assam when the incident took place.
Soon after the incident, his friends, with the help of locals, took Michel to Birpara hospital. He was reportedly still alive when he was brought to the hospital. However, locals allege the hospital was not well-equipped to handle the emergency situation; hence it was decided that he be taken to Siliguri.
They were on their way to Siliguri when they were forced to stop at the Birpara rail gate crossing for about 15 minutes. Sensing that Michel’s condition was deteriorating further, the group then decided to take him back to Birpara hospital instead.
However, Michel reportedly passed away before he could be taken back to the hospital. In the absence of a mortuary in the hospital, Michel’s body was taken to Alipurduar hospital to be kept there till his family members or relatives arrive in the country.
