The incident first came to light on September 7 when the survivor tried to commit suicide as she was unable to speak out about her ordeal
Guwahati: A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped six times in the past four months by a teacher of DPS Dhaligaon in Assam’s Chirang district.
The incident first came to light on September 7 when the girl tried to commit suicide by consuming phenyl as she was unable to speak out about her ordeal. The survivor was taken to the Dhaligaon township hospital where she told a nurse that she was allegedly violated by her employer, Herombo Das, a teacher of DPS Dhaligaon.
On knowing about the incident, members of the All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASAA) rushed to the hospital and recorded her statement. The AASAA members then contacted the survivor’s father and lodged an FIR at the Dhaligaon police station.
Incidentally, the minor was unable to give her statement to the police as she and her family were threatened to “face repercussions”. Speaking to EastMojo, Amrit Ekka, vice-president of AASAA, Bongaigaon, said, “She could not narrate the whole incident to the police out of fear which made the case weak.”
Meanwhile, a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence (POCSO) has been registered and the accused arrested.
Despite the threats, the family, with the help of AASAA, came out once again and said that they will re-record the statement with the police and seek justice.
The minor was employed as a domestic help at the teacher’s house for the past six months when she was allegedly raped repeatedly. The rape survivor revealed that when she told about the incident to the accused's wife, she beat her up and told her to keep quiet.
AASAA workers also said that they will take up the case with the state women commission.
