In a tragic incident, a 22-year-old college student died after he fell down from the stairs while trying to run out of his building following an earthquake in Siliguri, West Bengal, on Wednesday morning.
Around 10.22 am on Wednesday, when tremors were felt in Siliguri, along with several parts of the country, Samrat tried to run out of his room located on the first floor of his residence, but soon fell down from the stairs. He was rushed to a private nursing home where the doctors declared him brought dead.
His mother, Usha Das, said, “Samrat lost consciousness after he fell down from the stairs. When I poured water on his head, he seemed to gain consciousness but failed to utter anything. It was then we took him to a hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.”
Preliminary examinations suggest that Samrat succumbed to head injury. However, the exact cause of death will only be known once the post-mortem report is out. The body has been sent for post-mortem to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital.
Samrat Das was a student of Murshidabad B.Ed College and had come back to his home in Baubazar, Shantinagar of Siliguri.
An earthquake with magnitude 5.5 on the Richter Scale hit several parts of West Bengal. Strong tremors were also felt across the Northeast as well as Bihar and Bangladesh. The epicentre of the earthquake was Sapatgram, near the Kokrajhar district in Assam.
