Bengali actress Payel Chakraborty found dead in Siliguri hotel

Siliguri: Bengali TV and film actress Payel Chakraborty was found hanging in a hotel room in Siliguri, West Bengal, on Wednesday evening.

Local reports suggest that the actor had checked into the hotel on Tuesday. She was to leave for Gangtok on Wednesday for a schedule shoot. When the 34-year-old actress did not check out on time, and did not respond to repeated knocks on the door as well, the hotel staff broke into her room and found her hanging.

Expressing shock over the incident, Prabir Guha, her father, said Payel was in depression for the past couple of days as she had recently undergone a divorce. “She was very upset over a divorce-related case. However, nobody in the family had any clue whatsoever about the drastic decision taken by her. She looked absolutely okay in her daily activities, including the shooting schedule.”

Payel Chakraborty was an up and coming actor and had been seen in a number of television serials and films. She started in shows like Chokher Tara Tui and Goenda Ginni. She had recently moved to films and was to play a key role in Shankar Roy’s Kelo.

The news of her death has cast a pall of gloom among the film fraternity in Kolkata.
