In one of the worst fire tragedies in the national capital, a massive fire broke out in a four-storied commercial building near the Mundka Metro station in Delhi on Friday afternoon.
The number of casualties is 27 till now with many still reported missing.
Although the fire broke out around 4.30 pm, the death toll became clear only by night when the fire fighters were able to extinguish the fire to some extent and enter the premise.
Here are some of the most tragic fire incidents ever reported in India.
Haryana- December 1995
This is the worst fire incident in India’s history which occurred at Mandi Dabwali in Haryana on December 23, 1995. The fire was caused by a short-circuit in one of the generators, causing a stampede and claiming 540 lives.

A major fire broke out at Upaahar Cinema, near Green Park in New Delhi, during the screening of the movie Border. It is considered to be one of the the worst fire tragedies in India. The fire claimed 59 lives and injured more than 100.
Kolkata- December 2011
A hazardous fire broke out in the AMRI hospital of Kolkata in December 2011 where 89 people lost their lives as a result of suffocation caused by carbon monoxide. The carbon monoxide spread in the entire hospital premise, making it impossible to breathe. Six board members of the hospital were arrested following the tragedy.
Meerut– April 2016
A massive fire broke out in Brand India Fair at Victoria Park in Meerut claiming around 100 lives. Although the reason behind the fire is not clear, it is definitely one of the major fire tragedies to happen in the recent past.
