Shillong: Banned militant outfit Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) claimed responsibility for the IED blast at Khyndailad also popularly known as Police Bazar, on Monday.
According to home minister Lahkmen Rymbui, a juvenile claiming to be the Area Commander of HNLC has been apprehended and detained for interrogation. The juvenile led the police to another live bomb planted at Demthring, which was defused immediately.
“After a few hours of the incident, based on reliable source information, one person was apprehended and detained for necessary interrogation,” Rymbui told reporters.
“It was a crude IED planted in front of the commercial complex in Police Bazar. The juvenile’s confessions led the police to another suspect who has also been detained,” informed the home minister.
Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger also informed that during the enquiry, the person admitted his involvement and claimed himself to be the Area Commander of Shillong Region of the banned outfit- Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).
“On his lead, a crude IED was recovered from the residence of his relatives located in Nongthymmai, which was safely defused and duly seized in the presence of independent witnesses,” mentioned Nongtnger.
The home minister said that even though the outfit has claimed responsibility, the police are looking at the culprits involved and added that the juvenile is a resident of Nongstoiñ, West Khasi Hills District.
When questioned if this explosion was the result of an intelligence failure, the home minister said they were quick to act and nab the culprits involved. After the IED blast at Police Bazar and last year’s blast at Laitumkhrah market, home minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that these areas have now been identified as vulnerable areas.
On Sunday evening, an IED blast took place in the heart of Shillong city at Police Bazar. There were no casualties or vehicle damage.
Meanwhile, HNLC general secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw posted on his social media page, “We take full responsibility of the bomb blast yesterday in Shillong.”
