Toofaan, starring Farhan Akhtar and Mrunal Thakur, is making headlines after Twitter erupted against it and accused the makers of promoting ‘Love Jihad’.
In the film, Farhan portrays the role of Aziz Ali, a boxer on his journey from being an underworld gangster to a national boxing champion. His lover Dr Pooja Shah (Mrunal Thakur) plays an important role in motivating and supporting him on his journey to success. As a result of this inter-faith love, #BoycottToofaan is trending on social media.
Some social media users have also associated this issue with Farhan’s political inclination as he had been a part of Anti- CAA/ NRC protests. The makers of Toofaan faced increasing criticism after the release of the teaser in March, and now that the film is near to its release, netizens are calling for a boycott.
A YouTube video of the channel Sab Lok Tantra which triggered the controversy has been removed from Youtube for spreading hate speech. This channel has been constantly posting videos and instigating people to boycott people mostly celebrities who have been soft targets of Hindu fundamentalists. And now, some netizens are tweeting in support of the channel with the hashtag #Bringbackbaba and some accounts associated with right-wing are further forwarding and retweeting it.
