In a peculiar case, a truck driver in Odisha was fined Rs 1,000 for not wearing a helmet.

This bizarre challan was issued to Pramod Kumar Swain of Ganjam district in Odisha. The matter came to light when he visited the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to renew the permit to drive his truck.

When he questioned the officials about how he could be fined for driving without a helmet against his registered truck number, he was not given any reasonable answer. Swain had to eventually pay the fine of Rs 1,000, said reports.

Swain engaged in water supply and has been driving the truck for the past three years.

On the glaring error, he said the government should take steps to prevent such things, as it is unnecessary harassment of people to collect money.

This is also not the first time that people in India have been fined for not wearing a helmet while riding cars or trucks.

In February this year, Prashant Tiwari of Manna Gaon in Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh received an e-challan on his mobile phone for not wearing a helmet while driving his car.

The RTO fined Tiwari Rs 500 for driving his four-wheeler, a Mahindra Bolero car, without a helmet on November 30, 2020.
